about

Too Much Saturn dedicates “Stop Thief” to the memory of Guy Sheldon, our good friend and bass player who suddenly passed away on January 25th. We will cherish the wonderful memory of us all gathered around a big old condenser microphone, tracking the real live hand claps in the chorus of “Stop Thief.” Guy stood nearby capturing it on his phone while encouraging us to stay in time and not crack up. Looking back and knowing Guy, he was likely trying to crack us up. We’ll miss so much more than his melodic bass lines on the big orange 12 string bass and his beautiful high harmonies. Until we meet up again at the great gig in the sky, rock on Guy, rock on.

"Stop Thief” was written years ago and got a little bit of an update but remains much the same as it originally was. Influenced by Power Pop from The Knack, The Records, Shoes and Squeeze, it’s one of those songs that came easily, quickly and seemingly from the ether.

Recording it was a blast with a vintage 1966 Epiphone Wilshire 12-string solid body through an all tube, also 1966 vintage Vox Pathfinder amp and a Waterstone Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) Signature 12-string bass guitar. That’s a lot of strings! “Stop Thief” was recorded last fall at Rax Trax Studios, Chicago, with production by Rick Barnes. We feel "Stop Thief and our earlier 2022 release, "Life on Repeat" are the band’s best work to date and Guy’s part in all this cannot be overstated.

Look for “Stop Thief”, “Life on Repeat” and other TMS music at Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Youtube.

lyrics

Stop Thief
Up and down the avenue street lamps glow thru the midnight blue
I saw you with that girl again and I know you know
She belongs with me (she belongs with me)
What possesses you to lead your life of crime
You’d better let her go or you’ll pay and do your time

You better stop thief, there goes my girl again
Stop thief, there goes my girl again
Stop thief, there goes my girl again
This time she’ll be mine, this time she’ll be mine

She’s back here right beside me now
I’ll watch her close and keep her next to me
I turn around you’re back again, stop right there
I’m no one’s fool you see (or romantic detainee)
What possesses you to lead a life of crime
You’d better let her go or you’ll pay and do your time

You better stop thief, there goes my girl again
Stop thief, there goes my girl again
You better stop thief, there goes my girl again
This time she’ll be mine, this time she’ll be mine
Yeah this time she'll be

You better stop thief, there goes my girl again
Stop thief, there goes my girl again
Stop thief, there goes my girl again
This time she’ll be mine, this time she’ll be mine
